| Description | The ramparts and walls of Leith Fort are in the right foreground of the drawing, with the rooftops and harbour of Leith in the middle distance in the centre of the picture. The Bass Rock and the distinctive peak of North Berwick Law are on the left-hand side of the page, and appear so distant that they are quite difficult to see. The drawing is dated 1784, but is unsigned by the artist. Leith Fort dates from shortly before this 1779 drawing. Its architect was James Craig (1744-95) who also designed Edinburgh's New Town. Today only the entrance, walls and a couple of minor buildings remain of the fort. |
