| Description | This drawing is dated 1783, but is unsigned by the artist. It appeared in Captain Francis Grose's book 'The Antiquities of Scotland, volume II', published by Samuel Hooper of London in 1791. There are several pictures from Grose's books in the Hutton Collection. Elcho Castle stands on the south bank of the River Tay about three miles south-east of Perth. James III of Scotland granted lands to the Wemyss family in 1468, although the present castle probably dates from about 1570. Originally, the castle comprised the large central tower house that still stands today, and smaller buildings ranged round a courtyard to the south. In the 1830s, however, the Eighth Earl of Wemyss demolished most of the minor buildings. |
