| Description | The Sinclair family may have established itself in the Lothian area under the ‘Normanisation’ programme which David I is supposed to have instigated. The family hailed from Saint-Clair-sur-l'Epte in Normandy and Henry de St Clair of Roslin was granted lands in 1162. The family were always closely involved in Scottish politics and bought their Orkney Earldom from King Hakon of Norway in 1379. King James swapped this title for Ravenscraig Castle in Fife, in 1470, as he felt the Earls were too powerful. |
