| Description | This pencil sketch, of a feature at Crossraguel, is difficult to make out but appears to resemble the abbey's 'sedilia'. 'Sedilia' is the plural of the Latin ‘sedile’, meaning chair, and denotes the places used by the clergy whilst officiating during the liturgy. This style of stone seat is peculiar to Great Britain where they usually have three seats - one each for celebrant, deacon, and sub-deacon. The 'sedilia' at Crossraguel dates from the 1400s. |
