| Description | This drawing shows a monument located in the interior of Ardchattan Priory, which lies on the banks of Loch Etive, near Oban, Argyllshire. The monument comprises six carved figures, both male and female, located in highly decorative niches, with inscription around the periphery. There are several other drawings in the Hutton Collection, mostly dating from 1820, detailing the interior and exterior of Ardchattan Priory. Founded in the thirteenth century by Duncan MacDougall, Ardchattan Priory was home to members of the Valliscaulian Order. Whilst the monks only remained at Ardchattan until the mid-sixteenth century, religious services continued there until the mid-eighteenth century. Today, Historic Scotland cares for the ruins and they are open to the public. |
