| Description | This page is not titled, but the sketch on it is of a sculpted stone that was set in the wall of an alms house or hospital in Leith. The words on the stone read: 'IN • THE • NAME • OF • THE LORD • VE • MASTERIS AND • MARENELIS • BYLIS THIS • HOVS • TO • VE • POVR ANNO DOMM • 1555'. The sketch is not dated and is unsigned. The Masters and Mariners of Trinity House, Leith's oldest and wealthiest trade incorporation, built the alms house or hospital in which this sculpted stone was set. At that date, in the sixteenth century, 'hospital' did not necessarily refer to an institution that provided medical care, but might rather be a place where the poor received some sort of food, shelter or financial relief. The original building came down in 1816, but the sculpted stones were preserved and incorporated into a new Trinity House, built on the same site as a guildhall for the trade incorporation. |
