| Description | A note at the bottom of the page, in Hutton's hand, reads, 'By ____ Nisbet, Painter at Forres, 1816'. This may have been Andrew Nisbet. A scale and key have been included below the title. Hutton has made other notes on the plan, which seem to criticise Mr Nisbet's draughtsmanship! King David I founded Kinloss Abbey around 1150. Situated beside Kinloss Burn, north of Forres, monks of the Cistercian Order from Melrose settled the Abbey. Its central tower collapsed in 1574, but it was included in Pont's 1600 map and the abbey was still obviously an impressive structure. In 1601, Edward Bruce, Lord Kinloss bought it. In 1650, the structure received its final blow when Cromwell took the stone to build a fort at Inverness. Today it is a popular visitor attraction although only two of the original arches remain. |
