| Description | This coloured plan, of Inchcolm Priory, Inchcolm Island, Firth of Forth, includes a scale and compass, a key to the red lines used on the plan and useful notes regarding the monastery. Along the bottom of the plan, elevations of different parts of the building have been included along with an alphabetical listing that corresponds with the plan. Incholm Priory was founded in the early-twelfth century by King Alexander I, and dedicated to St Columba. Alexander is purported to have sought shelter with a small group of hermits on the island when his boat ran into trouble. In response to their hospitality, he ordered the construction of a priory. Built by Augustinian monks, it was elevated to the status of an abbey in the mid-thirteenth century. After suffering extensive damage during an English invasion in the fourteenth century, the abbey was largely restored during the 1400s. |
