| Description | This rough sketch shows Innerwick Castle viewed from below. Whilst it is difficult to distinguish the castle from the surrounding scenery, another drawing in the Hutton Collection shows a similar scene in much more detail. It is possible they are both by the same artist and that this example was merely a preliminary sketch. Innerwick Castle is situated on a rocky eminence close to the Thornton Burn, near the village of Innerwick. The ruins that can be seen today are thought to date from the fifteenth century, although a castle is said to have stood on this site since the fourteenth century. Originally built for the Stewart family, it eventually passed to the Hamiltons before being destroyed by the Duke of Somerset in the mid-sixteenth century. |
