| Description | The name of the artist is not given, and it is probable that this is one of Hutton's own sketches. A note beneath the title reads, 'This sketch shows the steeple and part of the roof of the Parish Church. The Priory sat about 80 yards to the North-East of the church, but not a vestige remains. The exterior of the church is uncommonly plain, but the inside exhibits marks of considerable antiquity, particularly a circular arch near the East end'. Monymusk is a village on the River Don, seven or eight miles south-west of Inverurie. There is evidence of early human settlement in the area, in the form of standing stones and the remains of a seventh-century Culdee priory church. This may not have been the priory in Hutton's notes, as there are also records of an Augustinian priory having been set up in Monymusk in 1170. |
