| Description | Although this picture is unsigned, it is likely that George Henry Hutton drew the picture himself. The south-west view of the church is very similar to that in a sketch made six years later, also apparently by Hutton. However, this earlier sketch seems to be from a more elevated and slightly more distant position, revealing clearly that the priority sits in a valley, surrounded by low, rolling hills. The area of Scotland now known as Angus was once the Pictish province of Circenn, and at the heart of this province was Restenneth. The missionary Boniface, who allegedly brought Christianity to the Picts of Circenn, may have founded church in Restenneth in the seventh or eighth century. After the subsequent demise of the Picts, the site retained its ecclesiastical connotations, and Augustinian canons built a priory here in the twelfth century; the parts of the priory that survive date mainly from this period. |
