| Description | Alexander Morton made this plan of St Andrews Cathedral, Fife, in 1813. The plan employs the usual technical drawing conventions. On the right side of the plan is a list of the buildings and important areas that exist within the cathedral's perimeter wall. Roman numerals indicate these buildings and areas on the plan. The origins of the cathedral date back to AD 732, when Bishop Acca supposedly brought the relics (bones) of St Andrew to the settlement. Work started on the cathedral in 1160 and finished in 1318. They consecrated it that same year in the presence of Robert the Bruce. The cathedral did not have good luck, however, and a mixture of stormy weather, invading English armies, the dawning of the Reformation and John Knox’s fiery sermons, combined to leave the long-suffering building in ruins. |
