| Description | This rough plan of Saddell Abbey, dated 18th August 1802, includes measurements and extensive notes regarding the abbey and the people buried in its grounds. According to the information provided, the building existed more or less in its entirety until 1766, when the proprietor 'took down a great part of it'. There are further drawings of Saddell Abbey and its interior in the Hutton Collection. Saddell Abbey stands close to the 'Alt nan Manach', or the 'Stream of the Monks', in Saddell Glen, Kintyre. Founded in the twelfth century by Somerled, Lord of the Isles, and completed by his son Reginald, Saddell Abbey was home to members of the Cistercian Order. Also known as 'white monks', the Cistercians lived a very austere and isolated existence, largely devoting their time to prayer and hard physical labour. |
