| Description | A scale, in chains and links, has been included below the title in this plan, and there is a key at the bottom left, denoting the uses for various buildings. W. Whyte, author of the plan, has signed his name in the bottom right corner. The Hutton Collection contains a similar plan, dating from 1805, by 'Mr ___ Allan'. At the time of this survey, the monks would have abandoned the abbey. It is clear from this plan that the community was well-organised. As well as the usual ecclesiastical buildings, there was a school, a mill, and note 'f' reads, 'a lead pipe was found in this Direction', which suggests they had some form of water supply in place. |
