| Description | Alexander Morton, who drew many fine plans of Scottish church buildings during the early 1800s, made this plan of St Gile's Cathedral in 1817. The Roman numerals that appear in the plan indicate the main rooms and areas in the cathedral, and correspond with the numbered list that is included at the left hand side of the drawing. One of Scotland's most famous cathedrals, St Giles' is after a French saint, in honour of the Auld Alliance between Scotland and France. Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, the Bishop of St. Andrews officially consecrated it in 1243, although the massive pillars in the building date back to 1120. Rich in history, St Gile's is particular associated with the Scottish Reformation, as John Knox preached here during the sixteenth century. Legend has it that it was also here that Jenny Geddes threw her chair at the minister when Charles I tried to impose Laud’s new prayer book in 1637. |
