| Description | A note below this coloured sketch reads, 'This view shows the North Aisle of the church, Aug 1802'. There is no name attached to this sheet. Saddell Abbey covers a wide area, up to Saddell Water, represented by the blue in the picture. Somerled, King of the Isles, and St Malachy of Mellifont, Ireland, who was on his way to Rome founded Saddell Abbey in 1148. Somerled’s son, Reginald, completed the establishment of this Cistercian house when he came to power. The Irish influence of the original monks is visible in the Celtic symbolism present in the stone carvings. |
