| Description | This is a sketched plan of Elgin Cathedral, Moray 'by Mr P. Duff, Dec 1815'. This is probably Patrick Duff, who published 'Sketch of the Geology of Moray', in 1842. He has included a table at the bottom that gives the areas of different parts of the cathedral in square links. The Hutton Collection contains a number of other drawings of Elgin Cathedral. Elgin Cathedral, dating from 1244, was the seat of the Bishops of Moray. It stands on a site dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It had a turbulent history, including torching by the 'Wolf of Badenoch', Alexander Stewart, in 1390, as retribution for the then bishop's excommunication of him. It was restored but fell into disrepair after the Reformation and was only saved from total ruin when, eventually, the Government began maintaining it as a monument. |
