372 FAMILY AND DOMESTIC LETTERS. [1718.
hath had the testimony of a verie discreet, sober youth. Sir, I know not
wherin I can serve yow heir, else I would willingly laye myself to doe it. But
it's lyke, by reason of your long absence from your oune countrey, yee may be
at a loss for want of authentick documents for your descent, and the regular
bearing of the amies of the familie from which yee are descended, with con-
gruous differences to be recorded in our Lyon King-at-Arrnes his bookes, and
his seall appended therto. And if yee have not alreadie had it done, let me
know, and any further instructions about it shall be observed and transmitted
with the first occasion, without any further trouble to yow, if God continoue
me in health. I am so far informed that your father or grandfather [who]
died elect bishop of Bath, and Wells, in England, was come of the familie of
Maxwells of Teiling, in Angus, now altogether extinct, and that his wyfe was
of the name of Burnett, sister to the late Dr. Burnet, Archbishop of St.
Andrewes.
Direct yours to Sir John Maxwell of Pollok, Barronett, one of the Sena-
tores of the Colledge of Justice in North Brittaine, and it cannot miscarie, wee
are all so weed knoune all Brittaine over.
[To Brigadier Thomas Maxwell, in Barbadoes.]
