368 FAMILY AND DOMESTIC LETTERS. [171'
James first Duke of Montrose, Chancellor of the University of Glasgow,
to [Sir John Maxwell, Lord Pollok.]
London, March 12, 17 If.
366. My Lord, I have received, with a very sensible concern, full accounts of what
happened lately in the Colledge of Glasgow, and could not but take the first
opportunity of expressing to your Lordship the just resentment I have of the
unworthy treatment yow have mett with at the hands of the society. Your
Lordship may justly under value it, but yow litle deserved it from men who
ought raither to have been proud of expressing upon every occasion the sense

must be fallen upon as may effectually prevent the like intolerable breaches for
the future.
Your Lordship will doe me the favour to present my humble service to
Mr. Maxwell, my Lady Ami, and Mrs. Lillias ; and beleive that I am alwayes
with the greatest truth, my Lord,
Your Lordship's most humble and faithful! servant,
Montrose.
Thomas sixth Earl of Haddington to [Sir John Maxwell, Lord Pollok,] .
12th March 1717.

university of Glasgow, and that my son was so active in voteing for a new

any son of mine should appear so idly as he hath done ; but I hope you will
