356. My Lord, the day after you parted I heard of your faschieuse adventure, by
losing your cloakbag, but was well satisfied to understand, on Tusday, that it
was found and restored without any loss, but, on the contrary, I am sure, with
the advantage, that you will make your servants more carefull in tyme coming.
When I heard on Tusday that it was found, I was under so sharp a fit of the
gout in my left heel that I could neither write to you nor my sister, but I hope
she hath got back her two notes. I have no news to give you ; but I hope my
sister Lilly, for annuairent, will send me stinking cheese. Mr. William Car-
michael was with me since you left this place, and told me he had been look-
ing for the Earl of Glasgow ; because, in the treaty you had with his father
about your cusin, Mr. Maxwell, you had said you would refer all conditions to
the Earl of Glasgow and me. I told him that the Earl had been in town, and
came only and gave me a standing visit, and was gone west ; but when he re-
turned, that matter might be prosecut. He spoke to me a litle of his father's
demand about the fee of the estate. I told him that, if they did well, they
should not be strict on that head, because I knew you was somewhat nice upon
it, but I was perswaded that there was no hazard. My Lord, I only write this
to you, that you may see they mind your proposal, and that you may prosecut
it as you think meet. You have my Lord Glasgow in the west, and you may
also take your own way with my Lord Hyndfoord. But I am of opinion that,
