331. Honoured sir, . . . For newes, I have litle of particular to send you, not
having had tyme to see the letters and gazetts. But generally, both letters and
persones come from England tell us that they are in the greatest confusion
there, and specially at London, that people can be hi. All the train-bands of
the city are up, and the halfe of the militia in the haill kingdom, by publick
orders from King and Parliament, are still in armes. The citizens never stay
in their houses without doors shut. They scarce cast off cloathes, and sleep but
by turnes. After day light, few or none goe out of doors for fear of being
knock'd downe ; and many sayes His Majestie's persone is in the greatest of
hazard from their continuall attempts. The Duke of Monmouth, they say, got
a letter, which quhen opened a powder came vp vpon his face and nose, that
with difficulty, they say, his face is preserved and himselfe not poisoned. This,
they say, is trew. Severalls more are apprehended, and making large confes-
sions vpon pardones. The two houses have agreaed, and past the bill for re-
moving all popishly affectted from the city ten myles, with a salvo, which, some
says, is an exception of his royall hieness the Duke of York : others, that they
