318 FAMILY AND DOMESTIC LETTERS. [1670-71.
Saturday, the last night of this year, I shall wish yow a good new one, and
is till meeting, and ever

My mother hath her service presented to yow and all your freinds. I
will not bid yow present my service to any bodie, as I did in my last, but shall
give yow such ane ample comission as you gave me, viz., to whom yow will.

319. Dear Mistress, this is the first tyme I could wryt to yow since I cam from my
good comerad Wattie Stewart's mariage, which was on Thursday last at nyne
a clock at night, els I would not have so far forgotten myself, specialy since
our freindship was a litle more strictly made up. I heard the Captaine was
heer to have given me a visit, and that your father and some others of your
freinds are to be heir on Thursday to compleat his affaires, crahich made me to
stay my journey this week, els I had seen yow. But seeing they are to be in
the countrey, I chuse rather to waitte on them that I might see them once at
this house, and then I purpose to come alongst with them all the way.
Now, my deirest, seeing yow and I hath given our purposes so solemnely
under our hands that ther needs not these complementing professions of kynd-
nes that are used in the beginings of such a busines as this, it most be our
work to live, yow as myne and I as yours : and I am hopefull, as God hath
guided us hitherto, so he will never leave us nor forsake us. And as I have
befor, so I againe most really professe myself to be,

Befor I left yow I craved liberty to invite my comerade, Craigends, when
ever our happie day should be ; quhich I have done. My mother hath her
