Robert second Earl of Nithisdaill to Sir George Maxwell of Pollok,
Edinburgh, 12th December 1648.
279. Cousin, I resolued still to haue sent some of my freinds west anent that parti-
cular betwixt you and me ; but Mr. William, your uncle, being hindered by his
wife's seeknes, nether my freindes could goe without him, nor could they be
informed of the condition of it without them. Bonie Jhon desired to be sent,
but I would not haue hime goe. I resolue to close with you, God willing,
betwixt and the next terme. I could not but acquaint you, that I haue in-
trusted the managing of my affaires to some of my freindes and others in
whom I confide to be overseeres ouer them, among whom I haue named you
as one of the principall. I would intreat you would subscriue and accept of
the same, seeing it can not be preiudiciall to you, but a little pains once a year.
As for the discharge you sent, I haue considered the same, and did aime at any
such thing as you supposed in that pomt. Soe expecting to see you in the time
of Parliament, wher I shall communicat bussines more particularly, I rests,

280. Honored cousin, I receaued youres, and am now alyke sorie with you in that I
followed the unhappie aduiise of sume of my freindes, who unaduisedly, with-
out your uncle's knowledge or my Lord of Wintone's, hath induced me to
pute my hand to ane minute with Preston for ane hunderd and four thousand
pound. I resent your letter uery much, and assures you, that out of the roll
of my best freindes you shall neuer be deleit ; and, for your respect, I will
indeauour to my uttermost to be reponed, if possible, against that minut, and
