influence to prevent the trial, at the instance of the Laird of Minto, of some of Sir John's
tenants for being at the battle of Langsyde ; denying the truth of a report that his Lordship
had obtained from the Regent a discharge in that behalf; and declaring that he would

nobility had determined to pursue and take vengeance upon the murderers of the late King
[Darnley], and to obtain possession of the person of the young Prince (James VI.), in order
to secure his safety ; and requesting Sir John to hold himself in readiness, upon 24 hours'
notice, to pass where the said nobles might direct, accompanied by his household, tenants,
and servants, which would redound both to his own honour and comfort, and the prosperity
