FT1HE death of Archibald, eighth Earl of Angus, extinguished the male line
-*- of George, Master of Angus, the eldest son of Archibald, fifth Earl of
Angus, commonly called Bell-the-Cat. The succession to the earldom of
Angus now devolved on the heir-male of the eighth Earl, Sir William
Douglas of Glenbervie. He was the eldest son of Archibald Douglas of
Glenbervie and Agnes Keith, daughter of William, second Earl Marischal.
Sir William was born in or about the year 1532. On 14th February 1551-2
he was contracted in marriage to Egidia or Giles Graham, daughter of Eobert
Graham of Morphie, in the Mearns, and the marriage was to be completed
before the 1st March following. 1 On that occasion he was infeft by his
father in the barony of Kemnay, in Aberdeenshire, from which he derived
his first territorial designation. 2
He rose in arms in defence of Queen Mary in 1562 against Huntly, and
