110 ARCHIBALD, FIFTH EARL OF ANGUS, "BELL THE CAT."
3. Janet, who married Andrew Hemes, son and heir of Herbert, first
Lord Hemes of Terregles. The contract of marriage is dated 25th
November 1495, and one part of the arrangement was that Andrew
was to divorce his previous wife, Beatrix Hemes, that he might
marry Janet Douglas. 1 Hemes afterwards asserted that the Earl
of Angus had not performed the promises made by him. 2 From
this marriage the present Lord Hemes is lineally descended. 3
