The traditional account of the origin of this
most ancient family is that a man of dis-
tinction on the borders conducted Ruther,
King of Scots, safely through the River
Tweed, in an expedition against the Britons,
at a place from that event called Rutherfoord.
The King, after the expedition was over,
bestowed some lands contiguous thereto upon
his faithful conductor, from which his pos-
terity assumed the name of Rutherfoord as
soon as sirnames became hereditary in Scot-
land.
Certain it is that the Rutherfoords have
always been looked upon as amongst the
most ancient and powerful families on the
borders, were a race of brave and gallant
