PREFACE.
The Records of a family that has helped to
make Scottish History, and has produced
many distinguished men, are worthy of pre-
servation.
Those who take an interest in Border story,
although unconnected with the not very
worldly wise — as regarded their own aggran-
disement — but brave and loyal race of Ruthir-
furd, may consider the labour expended in
this endeavour to trace the descent of the
various families of the name, not altogether
unserviceable.
Professed Genealogists will, he hopes, be

that Ilk and Edgerston, to whom he inscribes
these Notes and Pedigree, for his friendly
help in affording him access to the Edgerston
