Recent Advances in Engineering.

was developed into the triple-expansion system in 1882, and
later into the quadruple-expansion type. There followed the
direct driving steam turbine, then the geared turbine, but the
greatest of these advances belong to the twentieth century, and
it is appropriate that a separate chapter should be devoted to
them.
