THE MELVILLS IN CERES, CO. FIFE.
355
1708. April 27. John Melvill was buried (19). Part III,
1710. Dec. 13. James Melvill in Craigforthy was buried (20). App.
1722. Dec. 31. Alexander Melvill was buried (22).
1725. Jan. 5. Janet Bell, wife of David Melvill of Ceres, whs buried (23).
1729. Dec. 10. John Melvill of Caskirdo, was buried (25).
Thus, 1626-38, we have three contemporaries,
1. David Melvill in Tarvet Hill, whose wife, Janet Loudoun, died in May 1628, and who is thus probably
the David Melvill who married, 5 Aug. 1628, Isobell Sonar. He may be brother to both
2. William Melvill, who, in 1638, married Christian Rongh ; and
3. Margaret Melvill, who had married, before 1626, the Rev. Walter Buchanan and had issue including a
son, Patrick, who died in that year.
Either of the above, David or William Melvill, may well be the father of Robert Melvill of Caskirdo,
who married Grissel Row or Rue, in 1677, this being evidently his second marriage as he had a son, John,
who was retoured heir to him in Caskirdo, 24 July 1694 (Ret. Inq., Gen. xliv., 14, Fife, 1356) an entry not
without difficulty as William is designed "of Caskirdo" in 1693, though he is designed in Bowhouse in
1728 (24), and John is designed of Caskirdo on his death in 1729 (25).
The following pedigree gives the descent from Robert Melvill of Caskirdo, as evidenced by the Ceres
registers and amplified by the above-mentioned memoranda. The latter may be taken as accurate in regard
to the descent from John Melvill and Joan Fall, but are otherwise not free from doubt in various particulars,
as may be seen from the notes. The dotted lines indicate that the proof is not absolute.

1 The statement that John Melvill, who married Joan Fall of Dunbar, was son of John Melvill of Caskirdo
rests presumably on the authority of his grandsons, John and Edmund Melvill, who provided the
material for the early part of the above-mentioned memoranda. But in the absence of authority, and
having regard to the dates, it is not quite clear. Thus John of Caskirdo cannot have been born
much later than 1670, and would probably marry, after the fashion of the time, soon after he came of
age, i.e., 1690-95. In this event, if the John Melvill who married Joan Fall is his son, he was either
born long after his father's marriage, or himself married very late in life.
- The memoranda give no son but four daughters, viz., 1. — , m. A. Douglas, father of Bishop Douglas (of
Salisbury) ; 2, [Mary], m. (a) Fall of Dunbar (6) — Delisle, and d. 1785 ; 3, , m. Smith of Girles-
ton and d. 1790 ; 4, Marion, d. 1785-86.
3 Believed to have married and had a son, Thomas, who went to South Africa and died at Cape Coast
Castle in 1756, and a daughter who m. — Oswald and had two daughters who both m. brothers of the
name of Carment, whose descendants assumed the name of Melvill.
4 Believed to have married and had a daughter who is said to have married " her cousin Fall of Dunbar,"
but if so, (a) three first cousins would all have married Falls of Dunbar, and (b) the Falls were
not cousins at this date.
5 The above mentioned memoranda give their names as Elizabeth and Henrietta and say that the former
m. David Malcolm of Cupar, and the latter William Stephenson of Pittenweem.
6 7 These two persons are named in the Ceres registers but their parentage is not ascertained. They may
be sons of Robert of Caskirdo. but of which marriage does not appear.
8 9 The existence of these sons and the statements in regard to them rest on the memoranda alone.
