HELEN AND ELIZABETH. 115
who should attain " perfyte age," and conditional on a payment Part n.
to the heirs of Helen's sister Bessie (S.W. 338). This event ■ Chap - If -
and condition were looked on as satisfied by 28 Aug. 1666, when
sasine pursuant to this disposition was given to Alexander of
Kingennie and Easter Powrie (post, p. 148, n. 5), then provost of the
burgh (D.P.B. 499). Belsoue was living 20 July 1668, when
he got sasine of some annual rents in pursuance of his marriage
contract with Helen Wedderburn (D.P.B. 504), which he at once,
28 July, disponed to Sir Alexander Wedderburn of Blackness
(ib. 505). I have not ascertained when he died, but on 31 July 1680
the papers of his wife, her father, and her sister were in the hands
of Bobert Gardyne (see below), who was decerned to deliver them to
Alexander of Easter Powrie (D.Dec. 7). The South Seagait land
acquired by Bower from Helen and her sister is also named 18 Sept.
1683 (D.P.B. 534), and even as late as 8 June 1727 (ib. 578).
2. Elizabeth Wedderburn, 1 who has been already mentioned in the
account of her sister and coheiress, 1652-60 (ut sup). She had
married in her father's lifetime at Dundee, 24 Nov. 1646 (banns
4 Oct ), John Gardyne, goldsmith (DM. 1, 3), by whom she had issue
several children, all baptized at Dundee, viz., Alexander, 27 March
1647; Margaret, .8 Aug. 1652; Bobert, 11 Sept. 1653; and Helen,
11 Feb. 1655 (D.B. orig. record, s.dd.). She seems to have died
before 4 May 1660, when her heirs, i.e. no doubt her children,
are spoken of (S.W. 333), but these must have all died before
11-12 Oct. 1676, when Alexander Wedderburn of Easter Powrie was
cognosced heir to both her father and her, and was entered as such
in the North Argylegait land which they had once possessed (D.P.B.
525-26; B.A.D. 164). He subsequently, 12 May 1677, grants a
discharge of part of an annual rent payable to him as such heir
(D.D. 24). The Robert Gardyne decerned to deliver up papers to
him (D.Dec. 7, cited above), would thus seem not to be Elizabeth's
son of that name, though no doubt some relative of her husband.
The references to her and her sister in regard to the South Seagait land
in 1683 and 1727 have been already dealt with (D.P.B. 534, 578).
Helen Wedderburn. 2 only daughter of Bobert Wedderburn and Elspeth Lovell,
is first mentioned in an obligation or bond of provision granted her by her
father, 1591-93 (D.W. 12 e). 3 After her father's death her share of his
estate, including the amount of this bond, was paid over to her mother's
father, John Lovell, who, 13 Nov. 1596, acknowledged the receipt of it, and
bound himself to maintain her " honestlie at bed, burd, and abulzeamentis
upon the proffeit and excrescens thereof," and to hand her over the capital
intact "at her removing from his company" (D.W. 12/; D.B.R. 312). 4
This obligation of John Lovell was taken over later, 21 July 1598, by his
son John Lovell, the younger (D.B.B. 324), but both he and his father
would seem to have died before 30 July 1606, when Helen Wedderburn and
Elizabeth Lovell, no doubt a cousin, are served heiresses of the late James
Lovell, son of the late John Lovell, elder, burgess (D.B.B. 356), while a few
days later, 2 Aug., Helen, as " only daughter " of her parents, was entered
in a South Flukergait land as one of the heirs of her uncle, James Lovell
(D.P.B. 362). Another bond to her for 300 merks, dated 17 June 1612, is
registered in 1613 (D.B.B. 386). She is no doubt identical with the person
