PETER, MARRIED MARGARET KINLOCH. 97
of his father-in-law, William Kinloch, then very old (D.P.B. 264) ; 28 April 1595, when he Part n.
"elder" and his son Peter grant a discharge (D.B.R. 300/) ; 19 May 1595, when he and Cb ap. I.
Patrick Wedderburn are witnesses (D.P.B. 302 d) ; 27 Aug. 1595, when he, " elder," gets a
decree (D.B.R. 301/); and 15 Jan. 1596, when he is one of the maternal next-of-kin to
Peter Imrie (ib. 303). So again, 20 April 1596, Peter Wedderburn, " elder," is a witness
(D.P.B. 305); 18 May, as father-in-law of William Davidson he gets a discharge (D.P.B.
306); 27 May 1597 has a decree against him (ib. 316 c); IS June is a party to the
marriage contract of his daughter Margaret with George Blak (ib, 312) and 6 Dec. 1598,
14 April 1600, gets decrees in his favour (D.B.R. 327 b, 333 a). He is also named
25 Api-il 1600 as one of the father's kin to Elizabeth, daughter of John Wedderburn
of Craigie (D.B.R. 334, and ante, pp. 64-65) and, 21 June in the same year, when, subject to
charges in his own favour, he settles land on his daughter Janet and William Davidson,
her husband (D.P.B. 336) and he may be the Peter Wedderburn who is fined, 11 Dec. 1600,
for brewing 14d. ale (D.C.B. 23) The last reference to him as living is dated 1 Aug. 1604,
when Peter Wedderburn, elder, enters into a contract with Dr. David Kinloch, son to his
wife's brother, John Kinloch (R.D. 10), but he died before 5 Nov. in that year, when there
is an edict of curatory to Peter Wedderburn, son of umquhill Peter, burgess (D.B.R. 350),
and one of the first acts of this son is to implement, 6 Feb. 1607, his father's contract with
Dr. David Kinloch (D.P.B. 366.) There are several references to old Peter Wedderburn
after his death, both in regard to his son (D.P.B. 385 ; D.B.R. 376), and in reference to
lands once his (S.W. 368 ; D.P.B. 490, 566).
He married before 1577 (D.B.R. 231) Margaret Kinloch, daughter of William
Kinloch and Janet Lindsay (D.P B. 313) through whom he acquired a South Murraygait
land, near " that of William Lochmalony and the windmill " (S.W. 313; D.P.B. 241 a, 279),
which, with a North Marketgait land, descended to her eldest son (ib. 330, 349). By her,
who died before 10 Jan. 1509, when her son Peter is named as her heir (ib.), he had two
sons and three daughters : —
1. Peter Wedderburn [1585 1 — 1627?], l eldest son of Peter Wedderburn and Margaret
Kinloch, is first named, 28 April 1595, in a discharge by Peter Wedderburn, elder,
and his son Peter Wedderburn, younger (D.B.R. 300/'). He was entered heir to
his late mother, Margaret Kinloch, in a North Murraygait land, 10 Jan. 1599
(D.P.B. 330), and also in a North Marketgait property, 3 Jan. 1603 (ib. 349). He
was still young at this date, as he is called " puer " in the entry, although old
enough to join in a contract between his father and Dr. David Kinloch, dated
1 Aug. 1610 (R.D. 1610). On his father's death he got an edict of curatory,
5 Nov. 1604, so that he was then under age (D.B.R. 350), but seems to have
attained his majority by 6 Feb. 1607, when he implements the above-mentioned
contract (D.P.B. 366). He is called "young Peter Wedderburn," 6 Jan. 1606
(D.W. 9e), and, 9 Sept., Peter Wedderburn, younger (D.P.B. 363). That he was
his father's eldest son is clear from the confirmation of the will of his brother-in-
law, William Davidson, to which he is cautioner, and in which he is expressly
called '" eldest son of the late Peter" (Br.T. 1). He was thus heir to his uncle
Robert, the notary, by whose will (1611) he is left a legacy " in satisfaction of all
heirship claims " (Br.T. 2). He, " younger," was entered heir to him in various
properties (29 Feb. 1612), which he at once resigned to his cousin, James Wedder-
burn, merchant, and his wife, Christian Lovell (D.B.B. 381). 2 In 1615 (27 Feb.,
20 Sept.) he was entered in lands in Dundee as heir to his parents (D.P.B. 385),
and, 5 Jan. 1616, he is entered in lands in the Eastfield of Dudop as heir of his
uncle, Robert, the notary (D.P.B. 405 ; D.T.G. 3 b). The date of his death is not
. ascertained. His cousin Peter (son of the old clerk, post, p. 117) died in 1623, and
yet another cousin and namesake (son of Kingennie, post, chap. iii. ) died in 1628.
Thus two entries, 27 Sept. 1627, recording Peter Wedderburn as on the new

occasionally called burgess, the "Lockit Buik" contains no entry of his admission.
