PATRICK, SON OF ALEXANDER.
2. Patrick Wedderburn. See below. Part i.
and Chap. IV.
1. Elizabeth Wedderburn, who married James Turing (son and heir of John Turing),
burgess of Dundee. Her parentage appears from an entry 1 1 Dec. 1 566, when
James Turing and Alexander Wedderburn, elder, compear and bind themselves to
abide by the deliverance of arbiters, especially " anent the rest of the said James'
tocher guid " (D.B.R. 154), and she is named with her husband in decreets dated
4 Nov. 1569, 9 Aug. 1574 (D.B.R. 180, 211 a) ; 24 Sept. 1574, when her husband's
father settles a tenement in the Cowgait on her spouse and her (D.P.B. 163);
IS May 1584 (D.B.R. 271 e) ; and lastly, 1 Feb. 1595, when she and her husband
resign the Cowgait property to John Scrymgeour (D.P.B. 301).
2. Eufame "Wedderburn, who married Andrew Gedd.es (or Geddie), mariner, citizen
in S. Andrew's, who discharged his wife's brother Patrick of her tocher 5 April 1589.
The discharge is recorded as being "done in the house of Alexander Wedderburn,
elder," although Alexander was then dead, and is witnessed by James Turing, the
husband of Eufame's sister Elizabeth (D.P.B. 314).
3. Janet Wedderburn, named in the will, Sept. 1623, of her niece Magdalene, who
m. Thomas Jack (Br. T. 5). She is, perhaps, to be identified with the Janet
Wedderburn named as wife of Andrew Auchinlek, 19 Jan. 1593 (D.B.R. (295 a),
and as his relict 17 April 1598 (ib. 322 a).
Patrick Wedderburn [1546 1 — 1627].' He is first named 3 March 1560 as witness
to a transaction (D.P.B. 109), and then not for ten years, when, 12 April 1570, he gets a
decree (D.B.R. 186 a). He was admitted a burgess of Dundee 7 Feb. 1571 (D.L.B. 23),
and, two years later, was in possession of some lands in the Marketgait, which are named,
22 July 1573 (S.W. 25, 32), as a boundary of some settled on his brother Richard by his
parents, who at the same time, 23 July, made a settlement of a Skirling's Wynd tenement
on Patrick, subject to their own life-rent (D.P.B. 161). He is constantly named as a
witness from 1570 on, and a facsimile of one of his signatures as such will be found in
vol. ii., opp. p. 7 (S.W. 32). 2 He was a merchant in Dundee and is often so designed in
the references to him, e.g., in bonds, &c, granted by him. 3 and there is a reference to him
9 Dec. 1580 as part owner of a vessel trading with the Isles (D.R.S. 2). He was also at
one time a member of the Dundee council, and held the office of hospital master. Thus,
he is named on the council in 1588 (D.C.B. 10 a b) ; as magistrate 1596 (D.B.R 2>l\ d) ;
on the council 1599—1603 (D.B R.336 c, 340; D.C B. 21 a b, 25, 27, 28); as hospital master
16 July 1600 (B.B.R. 336 a) ; on assize 11, 25 Aug. 1606 (ib. 357) ; officer for poynding
(ib. 359 a) ; on the council 17, 22 Sept. 1611, 22 Sept. 1612 (D.C.B. 35 a b), and again on
assize, 7 Aug. 1618 (D.P.B. 407 b). Some of the earlier references to him are as attorney
for his brother Richard in Elsinore, e.g., 22 July 1573 (D.P.B. 166); 21 July 1574, when
he grants a discharge in his name (D.B.R. 210/), and a similar reference 27 July 1575
(D.P.B. 186 ;. He is also named 5 April 1589 as getting a discharge for the tocher of his
