This letter is sealed with a small red seal, showing a shield on which is a (very wide) chevron between
three roses. The chevron is charged with what may be a fleur-de-lys. There is a little mantling rouud
the shield and above it is a helmet full faced, surmounted by what is either a feather or fleur-de-lys. On
one side of it are the letters H.I., and on the other a \V. for Herr (?) Johannes Wedderburn. A facsimile
of the signature is given in vol. ii., opp. p. 32.
IV. Draft letter (abstract) from Alexander Wedderburn of Kingennie to John
James Wedderburn (S.W. 304).
This letter, which is in Latin, is dated at Kingennie " 5 July 1652," and signed " tuus amantissimus
consanguineus Alexander Wedderburne a Kinganie." It is written on a single sheet of paper. I have
omitted to take a full copy of it, but it is to the following effect. After acknowledging the receipt of the
foregoing letter of 14 July 1651, concerning the property of his correspondent's late venerated father,
situated in Dundee, and given by their father to the brother of John James Wedderburn, as more fully
set forth in a letter of which an authentic copy is enclosed, Kingennie hopes that John James will so
reverence the will of his father as to approve of the gift made to his brother whereby the name of
Wedderburn should be preserved in those properties.
V. Letter from John James Wedderburn at Ollmutz to Alexander Wedderburn of
Kingennie ^S.W. 305).

Scotland upon my brother and that accordinglie yee refuisse me for ther ouner. Treulie, Sirr, I reuerance
my father his intention to bestou such uith my consent, yet I belieu yee uil find neather my consent,
giuen nor yeet anie ualed disposition made by him, bot I niynd not to plead my richt in this by penne
althogh nothing mor then your refuisall might prouock me to appropriat them to my self!', houbeit I hope
Sirr you will not theuck becaus I did demand thes ureatts in my oune nam from you that therfor they
wer to goe out of the nam. neather in that I intended to tak them from you that therfor 1 did tak them
from my brother, nor yett becaus I apoynted the cair of them to my cussing, that therfor he should possess
them as his heritadg, bot that in releiuing you he might ouersee them (as in my judgment mor pertinent
to hym) untill farder order uhither from me or my brother yet I trust uithout prceiudic to you and seeing
my brother leiues nou uith me who am or at the lest shuld be as tender of his uellfarr as anie man els, I
uill one mor entrait youe both from him and me to disburden your selff in delyuering unto my cussing
Alexander Halyburton, the euidents of thes landes with ane acompt of your intromissione uho I trust is
sufficieutlie dead uith pouer to dischardg you. I am onlie sorrie to heir you haue such ueake thoghts of

should be to my greater expens, uhich I uill not think can be occasioned by on uho profest such loue to
the father, as to shoue the conterar to his sonne. So hopeing this shall searue to preuein all forder mis-
