36 A Mistaken Tradition.
her love to you and to your Children I have Six Granchildren lives with
me fatherless and motherles that I have the Care of in my old age.

The next letter was from the last writer's brother, Robert
Barclay, and reads as follows :
State of New Jersey, Middlesex County, Middlesex, March the 14th, 1803
Kinde Kindsman
My Brothers John & Charles Barclay Received a letter from thee
by the hand of Phenus Bond Esqr Bearing date the 2th of August 1802 —
Which Informed us all wee brothers of thy health and well fare which
wee was happy to heare — and that wee and our famileyes are in health at
Present, which wee are thankfull to Devine Provedence for all his Bless-
ings to us for all his merceys — I am sorry to here of thy Loss of thy
worthy Companyon — wee all Received the Money and Books — by the hand
of Esqr. Bond that was ordered as a Preasent to us by thy worthy uncle
which wee are thankfull to him for his Bennevolent Kindness to us — as
wee have acknowledged to him by a family letter sent to him hopeing
thee will keep up a Correspondence with thy Poor Kindsfolks here in
America — my Two Sons and their familyes moved to the Lands that thee
owns on the Suskahannah by Permission of Esqr. Bond and found it so
Dissolate and but few Settlers on it they were discouraged and went
one hundred miles further to the Lake Country and are settled there and
I hope they will geet in a way of liveing in a while hence, but hase it hard
times as yet — and so I Conclude — with Remember my love to thy antient
uncle David Barclay and thy self and family

The third letter was from John Barclay and was written
from New York some months after his brothers had written the
letters above quoted. He wrote as follows :
New York June the 7th 1804
Dear Cousin
Gratitude inclines me to wright to you to inform you that I am in
helth thrugh Mercy and now in the 74 year of my age my Bhrothers and
Sisters are in helth at Present Each of us have Receved the Books sence
I wrote to you last which we will retain in the Famely And the Money
sent to each of us has been laid out to the best advantage by each of us
for which Presents we Return our harty Thanks to you and your
Worthy Uncle David Barclay I want to hear from you and your Worthy
uncle ofner than I can Expect but Gratitude inclines me to keep us a
Coraspondence and renew our Relationship I purpose to goe to my sons
in a little time and live with him it is beyond Albany Thrty five miles
Montgomery County Breadalbane Town I send my Respect and Best
wishes to you and Worthy Uncle David My wife is well at Present
I remain your affectionate Kinsman
