16 A Mistaken Tradition.
And finally in the Records of the Proprietors at Perth Amboy
is found the following deed, executed subsequently to John
Barclay's death :
1734 April 13. Deed from Evans Drummond of 100 acres to "John Bar-
clay of the County of Middlesex." {Liber B-2, p. 189.)
Although a statement of the public offices held by John
Barclay, as the same appear from the records of the General
Proprietors, cannot bear on either of the questions of his marriage
or his issue, the record may nevertheless be of sufficient interest
to warrant the taking of space to insert the same here:
1688 Jan. 1. (1st of the nth month called January) appointed deputy
surveyor by George Keith, who was Surveyor General
under commission from the proprietors. (Liber D., p.
