i2 A Mistaken Tradition.
New Jersey, in which John Barclay appears either as grantor or
as grantee, with a reference to the volumes and pages where such
records may respectively be found. There is also noted the
record of administration on his estate.
1684 July 10. Deed from Robert Barclay of Ury, to John Barclay his
brother, of 500 acres in East Jersey, called "Plainfield."
(Referred to in Liber G., p. 97.)
1685 Jan. 18. Patent to John Barclay of lands in Plainfield. (Referred
to in Liber D., p. 12.)
1686 Mch. 8. Deed from David Barclay of Ury, and Robert his eldest
son, to John Barclay of Amboy.
Recites that David Barclay, Sr., gave to his son David,
merchant, certain moneys which in the event of said
David's dying without issue were to revert to his older
brother, Robert ; that with those moneys, David, Jr.,
had bought one-twentieth part of a propriety in the
Province of East Jersey, and goods of the value of
ii50, all of which goods, together with seven or eight
servants, he took in August, 1685, on board the ship
"America" bound from Aberdeen to East New Jersey;
that David died at sea during the voyage ; and that the
land and property thereupon reverted to Robert, and
that Robert with the consent of his father David and
out of love and affection for his brother John,
Conveys all said property to John Barclay (described as
"planter and inhabitant in said province"), on condition
that if John should die without issue, everything should
revert to Robert, his heirs, executors, &c.
A part of the expressed consideration for this transfer was
the extinguishment by John of a balance due on a bond
for 1350 Scotch marks, which Robert had given to John
in 1684. (Liber G., p. 108.)
1686 Dec. 20. Proprietors confirm above transfer to John Barclay, "in
right of David Barclay, his late brother." (Liber B.,
pp. 40 and 42.)
16S6 Dec. 29. Endorsed on deed last described was a transfer by John
Barclay to his brother Robert Barclay of Ury, of all
property thus confirmed to him. No wife joins with
John Barclay in the transfer. (Liber B., pp. 41 and
42.)
Robert Barclay of Ury, confirms to John Barclay, a
grant of 500 acres. (Liber B., p. 79.)
In a grant by the proprietors, John Barclay appears to be
one of the Council of the Deputy Governor. (Liber B.,
p. I74-)
The same appears under this date. (Liber B., p. 399)
John Barclay, described as "of Plainfield" appoints
George McKensie, his attorney to collect, &c. (Liber
D., p. 14.)
Deed by John Barclay (no wife mentioned), described
as "of Plainfield," to George McKensie, of all said Bar-
clay's land in Plainfield. (Liber D., p. 12.)
