substitute, and James Hill accounted for the proceeds to his
mother and sisters." " By the death of Mr. Laurence Hill, nth
December, 1792, the office became vacant."
Collector of the Merchants House.
On 15th October, 1767, James Hill was elected Collector of
the Merchants' House of Glasgow, of which body he had matricu-
lated as a Member on 4th October, 1760, his name appearing in
the " Gold Book " (vol. n., p. 13) as having paid £2 2s.
All these offices he held till his death, and all of them, — with
the exception of the Clerkship of the Bakers' Incorporation, which
ceased on his death, and the Registrarship of Sasines, which was
latterly merged in the General Registrarship for Scotland, during
the tenure of the late Thomas Hill of Merrylee,— have con-
tinuously, save only a hiatus of some years, in the case of the
Collectorship of the Merchants' House, been held by James Hill
of Cartside's lineal descendants till the present time.
Property of Cartside.
Besides his house at the corner of the Trongate and Stockwell
Street, and a Flat in the first or ground floor of a tenement on the
north side of Argyle Street, 1 probably acquired in view of a change
in his office or Writing Chambers, and of which he was possessed
at the time of his death, James Hill was also proprietor of the
small, beautifully situated property of Cartside, at Cathcart, where
he principally resided.
As appears from the titles, he acquired from various pro-
prietors, during the period between 1762 to 1788, the 20s. land
of old extent of Castlemains of Cathcart, on which is situated
the Castle of Cathcart. The principal portion of the estate was
