breaft and on either wing with a crofs-crofflet gules,
in the beak a fnake proper.
Borne by John William Smith of Overdinfdale Hall (third
fon of William Grey of Norton, co. Durham) who was autho-
rifed by royal licence to change his patronymic Grey for the
name of Smith. The family is defcribed as of Ryhope, Durham,
and Carrowborough, Northumberland. (Burke, "Heraldic
