In or before 1404, sir John attained the dignity of knighthood, as appears
from his designation in a charter dated 28 august in that year, granted by
king Robert III. to sir William of Abernethy of Saltoun of certain lands in the
sheriffdom of Forfar, 1 in which he appears as a witness to the signature of
the king. On 28 may 1422, Reginaldus de Irwyne, dominus de Maines, gives
to Patrick of Ogilvy, and Christian his spouse, his lands of Maines, with the
fourth part of the town of Coule with the mill of Maynes, in the sheriffdom of
Forfar, in excambion for the town of Glencuthill with the mill, in the sheriff-
dom of Aberdeen, tenendas de domino Johanne Lyon superiore earundem ; in
the crown confirmation the superior is designed simply John Lyoun. 2
In 1423, the negotiations so long pending for the deliverance of king James
I. from his captivity in England were brought to a successful termination,
and on 4 december in that year a list of the hostages to be delivered to
England in security of the ransome includes the name of "Johannes Lyon de
' Antiq. of Aberd. and Banff, II. 227.
