General Register House at Ediniurgh — " Ane respitt maid to Charlis Campljell
of Skeringtoun, Colin Campbell, sone of vmquhill Colin of Auchinhowye,
Williame Campbell, and Johnne Eoger, ffor yair treasonable biding and re-
manyng fra our Soverane Lordis army and raid of Sulway ; and for ye art and
part of ye slauchteris of vmquhill Alane Hammyltoun of Bardowe, Egbert
Striueing of Bankere, and Andro Striueling in BaUingtrocht ; and for all
oyeris actionis tresoun in our Soverane Lordis persoun, fyi'e, murthur and thift
being exceptit, and for xix zeris to indur. — At Striueling, ye ferd day of Jimii,
the zer of God ane thousand fyve hundreth xli zeiris."
IV. — In considering the different circumstances which may serve to ascertain the
identity of such an individual, something would depend upon the place of his
residence. — It might naturally be expected, that a person nearly connected with
the Family of Cadder would have lived either at Cadder, or in its vicinity ; at
least, the actual residence there of a Stirling, in a feudal age, would go pretty far
to infer a relationship. That Egbert of Bankier or of Lettyr did actually reside at
Cadder, and was occasionally thereby designed, is certain from the following
Documents — viz.
(1.) Dispensation, of this date, for the marriage of Robert Stirling and Marion ii. June
Fleming, mentioned above ; by which it appears that the said Dispensation, as
well as the banns for celebration of the said man-iage, were published and
proclaimed in the Parish Church of Cadder. — This could hardly have taken
place without a fixed residence within the parish.
(2.) It has been shown, that only three persons fell in the feud with the
Campbells of Auchinhowie, viz. Allan Hamilton of Bardowie, Andrew Stirling,
designed of BaUendrocht and Bankeir, and Eobert Stiiiing, designed indift'er-
ently of Bankier and of Lettyr. In relation to that transaction, there is extant
the following Gift of Escheat, in the Register of the Privy Seal, Bool- xi. fol. 37,
in his Majesty's Genercd Register House at Edinburgh, of which ilie following is
