THE SUTHERLANDS OF KINSTEARIE AND REARQUHAR 13
Kinstearie.
Principal Authority — Scots Peerage.
(75) James Sutherland, third son of Alexander (No. 49), born 1561. He owned
Kinstearie, in Morayshire. In 1593 he married Violet, daughter of
Thomas Fraser of Strichen, and had a son : —
(76) John Sutherland, who was father of: —
(77) WILLIAM SUTHERLAND. Will recorded 29th July 1698 (Moray). He married
Margaret, daughter of William Innes of Kinnermonie, and left two
sons : —
(a) David (No. 78).
(b) Hugh, ancestor of Sutherland of Rearquhar (No. 82).
(78) David Sutherland of Kinstearie, died January 1690. His Will recorded
30th July 1696 and 5th November 1701 (Moray).
Hrt116 recorded in Lyon Office, 1680-87. — Gules, a boar's head erased between
three mullets in chief and as many cross crosslets fitchy in base or within a
bordure argent. CREST : A cat saliant proper. MOTTO : " Still without
fear." [Plate III., fig. 3.]
He had a son : —
(79) James Sutherland of Kinstearie, died September 1722. He was served
heir to his father 17th February 1691 and 24th November 172 1, and was
succeeded by his son : —
(80) James Sutherland of Kinstearie. Served heir to his father 10th
November 1724. He left a son : —
(81) James Sutherland of Kinstearie, living 1766.

Rearquhar.
Principal Authority — Scots Peerage.
(82) Hugh Sutherland of Kinnauld, second son of William (No. 77). He
was appointed tutor to his nephew (No. 79) 17th February 1691, and
had a son : —
(83) JOHN SUTHERLAND. Married Christian, daughter and heiress of William
Sutherland of Rearquhar. She was served heir to her father (who died
February 1688) 8th November 1708. With his wife John Sutherland
acquired the property, and had by her two sons : —
(a) John (No. 84).
(b) James Sutherland.
(84) John Sutherland, left a son : —
(85) James Sutherland of Rearquhar. His grandnephew, Captain John
Sutherland of Invercharron, was served heir to him 8th January 1819,
and also to his great-grandfather (No. 84) same date,
