130 THE HAMILTONS OF INNERWICK
(2) Sir James Hamilton of Priestfield. Served heir
to his father 5th January 1666, and was still
living 169 1.
(3) Patrick Hamilton, born 14th November 1629.
(4) Alexander Hamilton, born 10th July 163 1.
(c) Sir John Hamilton of Trabroun, born 3rd November 1605 >
died about 1637. Will recorded 24th February 1638
(Edinburgh). He married, at Edinburgh, 7th August
162 1, Catherine, only child of Alexander Peebles of
Middleton and Skirling, and had : —
(1) Thomas Hamilton, died s.p. before 15th October
1647, when his uncle (see b, above) was
served his heir.
By his third wife he had : —
(d) Robert Hamilton of West Binning, Linlithgow, born 14th
May 161 5 ; killed unmarried with his brother, the second
Earl, August 1640. His Will recorded 24th January
1643 (Edinburgh).
Ht'HtS on Seal, 1603. — On a chevron between three cinquefoils a buckle (Mac-
donald). Before 161 3. — Gules, on a chevron between three cinquefoils
argent a buckle (? azure) (Stodart). [Plate VII., fig. 14.] 1613. — Gules, on
a chevron between tlwee cinquefoils argent a buckle azure between two ermine
tails proper, all within a bordure or charged with eight thistles proper.
[Plate VII., fig. 15.] When he was created Earl of Melrose, 1619, the
above formed quarters 1 and 4. 2 and 3. Argent, a fess wavy between
three roses gules. [Plate VII., fig. 16.] CREST proper as below. SUP-
PORTERS : Two talbots argent, collared gules. MOTTO as below (Nisbet).
On Seal, 1619. — 1 and 4. A fess wavy between three roses (for title of
Melrose). 2 and 3. On a chevron between tliree cinquefoils a buckle flanked
by two ermine spots, witldn a bordure cliarged with eight thistles. CREST :
Two dexter hands issuing from clouds, clasped fessways, holding between
them a branch of laurel erect. SUPPORTERS : Two talbots collared.
MOTTO: "Prcesto et persto" (Laing). In Font's MS., 1624. — 1 and 4.
Melrose as above. 2 and 3. Gules, a chevron argent charged with two
buckles azure between three cinquefoils of the second, on a bordure or eight
thistles vert. [Plate VIII., fig. 1.] CREST: Two hands joined together
holding three cypress branches vert. SUPPORTERS : Two spaniels proper,
collared gules. MOTTO as above.
(596) Thomas, second Earl of Haddington, born 25th May 1600 ; killed at
Dunglas Castle 30th August 1640. He married, first, Catherine Erskine,
daughter of John, Earl of Mar. She died 5th February 1635, having
had:—
(a) Thomas (No. 597).
(b) John (No. 598).
(c) Alexander Hamilton, died young, 13th December 1629.
(d) - — - Hamilton, born November 1630; died young.
(e) Robert Hamilton, born 28th July 1633 ; died young.
(/) James Hamilton, born 17th September 1634; died young.
He married, second, 14th January 1640, Jean Gordon, daughter of
George, second Marquis of Huntly.
(597) Thomas, third Earl of Haddington, died 8th February 1645. He
married, contract dated 30th May 1643, Henrietta de Coligny, daughter
of Gaspard, Comte de Coligny. He was succeeded by his brother : —
