(416) James Hamilton of Woodhall. Married, first, Bethia, daughter of Sir
John Hamilton of Orbiston, and had a daughter. He married, second,
Anne, daughter of Sir James Hamilton of Broomhill, and had : —
(417) JOHN Hamilton of Woodhall. Married Jean, daughter of James Muir-
head of Lauchope, and had a daughter.
Hmt6 recorded in Lyon Office, 1672-77. — Gules, three holly leaves, conjoined
at the stock or, between as many cinquefoils argent. [Plate V., fig. 1 1.]
CREST: A dexter hand holding a holly leaf proper. MOTTO : "Semper
virescens." Font's MS., 1624 (addition to), has : Gules, a pheon between
three cinquefoils argent.
In Lyon Office, 1680-87, to Lieutenant Frederick Hamilton, said to be
descended of Torrance. — Gules, a close helmet proper between three cinque-
foils argent. [Plate V., fig. 12.] CREST : An oak plant growing out of a
torse. MOTTO : " Tandem fit arbor."
In Lyon Office, 1680-87, to Captain Frederick Hamilton, son of Archibald
Hamilton, said to be son of Hamilton of Milburne, said to be a cadet of
Torrance. — Gules, a man's heart or between three cinquefoils ermine, within
a bordure embattled of the second, charged with six crescents of the first.
[Plate V., fig. 13.] CREST : Two twigs of oak disposed in saltire proper.
MOTTO : "Fortiter qui fide."
In Lyon Office, 1771, to Robert Hamilton of Bourtreehill, "whose grand-
father's grandfather was a younger son of Hamilton of Torrance." —
Gules, a fleur-de-lis or between three cinquefoils argent. [Plate V., fig. 14.]
Crest : An oak tree with a saw across tlie middle of trunk. Motto :
"Saw through."
In Lyon Office, 1672-77, to Robert Hamilton Daichmont, said to be descended
" of a brother of the house of Torrance." — Gules, a man's heart, encircled
with two holly bratiches disposed orleways or, between three cinquefoils
argent. [Plate V., fig. 15.] CREST : A hand holding a heart proper
Motto : "No heart more true"

Authority — House of Hamilton.
The Hamiltons of Peddersburn, parish of New Monkland, Lanark, are said to be
descended from the Hamiltons of Torrance {House of Hamilton), but the
connection is not given.
(418) John Hamilton of Peddersburn had a charter of his lands 6th April
1554. He was apparently father of: —
(a) John (No. 419).
(J?) Robert Hamilton, living 1589.
(419) John Hamilton of Peddersburn, died before 161 1, and was succeeded by
his son : —
(420) Thomas Hamilton of Peddersburn, died January 1617. He sold Ped-
dersburn, which later came into the possession of the Hamiltons of
Gilkerscleugh. By Christian, his wife, he had : —
(«) Thomas (No. 421).
(b) Robert Hamilton.
(421) Thomas Hamilton. Served heir to his father 15th March 1617. Will
recorded 27th July 1620 (Glasgow).
