78 THE HAMILTONS OF BELHAVEN
(329) JOHN HAMILTON OF BlEL, born 5th July 1656; died 21st June 1708. He
married, 1674, Margaret, daughter of Sir Robert Hamilton of Silverton-
hill, Bt. (No. 142), by his wife, Anne, daughter of John, first Lord Bel-
haven (No. m). On the death of this first Lord in 1679 he succeeded
as SECOND LORD BELHAVEN. His wife's Will recorded 14th December
1696 (Edinburgh). He had two sons : —
(a) John (No. 330).
(b) James Hamilton, Advocate, died s.p. 28th June 1732. He
married Anne, daughter of John Walkinshaw of that
Ilk.
(330) JOHN, THIRD LORD BELHAVEN, drowned 17th November 1721. He married
Anne, daughter of Andrew Bruce, of Edinburgh, and had : —
(«) John (No. 331).
(b) Andrew Hamilton, died unmarried 1736.
(c) James (No. 332).
(d) Major Robert Hamilton, died unmarried 1743.
(331) John, FOURTH Lord Belhaven, died unmarried 28th August 1764. He
was served heir to his father 20th March 1754, and to his cousin, Sir
James Hamilton of Rosehall, Bt. (No. 335), 5th April 1758.
HCttlS. — Gules, a sword erect proper, pommelled or, between three cinqnefoils
argent. [Plate IV., fig. 12.] Crest : A nag' s head argent. SUPPORTERS:
Two horses argent, bridled gules. MOTTO : "Ride through" {Arms of the
Scotch Nobility, 175 1).
He was succeeded by his brother : —
(332) James, fifth Lord Belhaven, died unmarried 25th January 1777.
Note. — Under an entail of the second Lord executed 17th October 1701, and confirmed
by the fifth Lord 14th May 1765, the estates devolved on Mrs Mary Hamilton Nisbet (No.
333i b, 1), but the title went to his kinsman, Robert Hamilton, sixth of Wishaw (No. 341).
Pencaitland.
(333) James Hamilton of Pencaitland, second son of Robert Hamilton (No.
328), baptised 28th August 1659; died 28th May 1729. Will recorded
14th August 1729 (Edinburgh). He was appointed a Senator of the
College of Justice as Lord Pencaitland, 17 12. He was served heir to his
brother, Daniel Hamilton, 17th December 1717. He married Catherine,
daughter of James Denholm of Westshiels, and had : —
{a) John Hamilton of Pencaitland, died 14th February 1724.
Will recorded nth August 1750 (Edinburgh). He
married Margaret, daughter of Alexander Menzies of
Saltcoats, Haddington, and had : —
(1) James Hamilton, born 25th January 1710; died
young.
(b) Alexander Hamilton of Dechmont, Linlithgow, and Pencait-
land, died 21st March 1758. Will recorded 17th August
1758 (Edinburgh). He was served heir to John Hamil-
ton of Dechmont 22nd June 1714; to his brother, John
Hamilton, 7th April 1724 ; to his uncle, Daniel Hamil-
ton, 19th May 1743 ; and to his father 30th January
1757. He married Mary, daughter of Sir Francis Kin-
loch of Gilmerton, Bt. She died 24th February 1772.
