Udston.
Authority — Scots Peerage.
(319) JOHN HAMILTON OF UDSTON, killed at battle of Langside, 13th May 1568.
He is said to have married a daughter of Sir Robert Dalzell of that Ilk.
His son : —
(320) William Hamilton of Udston, called "Willie Wisehead," was father of: —
(321) John Hamilton of Udston. Will recorded 5th December 1629 (Glasgow).
He married Margaret, daughter of James Muirhead of Lauchope, Lanark.
Her Will recorded 29th May 1655. They had issue : —
(a) John (No. 322).
(b) James (No. 327).
\c) William (No. 337).
(322) JOHN HAMILTON OF COLTNESS, died ^.before 31st May 16 17. Will recorded
23rd January 1625 (Glasgow). He married Helen Whiteford, and had : —
(a) John (No. 323).

(c) James Hamilton. } Living 3 1st May 1 6 17.
(323) JOHN HAMILTON OF UDSTON. He was served heir to his grandfather 9th
March 1633. Married a daughter of Sir Archibald Stewart of Castle-
milk, and had : —
(a) John (No. 324).
(b) Robert Hamilton, Writer in Edinburgh.
(324) John Hamilton, Sheriff of Clydesdale. Married Margaret, daughter
of Cleland of that Ilk, and had : —
(325) John Hamilton of Udston. Married Elizabeth, daughter of Robert
Brown of Coalstoun, and had : —
(a) Alexander (No. 326).
(b) William Hamilton.
(326) ALEXANDER HAMILTON. Married Elizabeth, daughter of William Cumming
of Drummine, and had two sons : —
(a) Major William Hamilton, who assumed title of Lord Bel-
haven, and voted as such 1790. He died 19th January
1796.
(b) John Hamilton.
HnttS recorded in Lyon Office, 1678-79. — 1 and 4. Gules, a mullet argent
between three cinquefoils ermine (Hamilton of Bruntwood). 2 and 3. Gules,
a man's heart proper, shadowed or, between three cinquefoils ermine (Hamilton
of Raploch). [Plate IV., fig. 10.] CREST : A boar's head erased proper.
MOTTO: "Ubiquefidelis."

He was appointed tutor to William, Margaret, John, and James Hamilton,
Udston.
