74 THE HAMILTONS OF BELHAVEN
(311) James Hamilton of Barnes, died 1833. He married, 1st July 1785,
Eleanor, daughter of John Dunn of Tannochside (Scots Magazine), and
had:—
(a) Major John Hamilton, killed at Salamanca 1812.
(b) James Hamilton, died in infancy.
(c) Claud Hamilton, died in infancy.
(d) James (No. 312).
(312) James Hamilton of Barnes, died s.p. 26th August 1852. He married
Margaret, daughter of Hugh Maclean of Coll, Argyll. He was succeeded
by his uncle : —
(313) Captain Claud Hamilton, second son of John Hamilton (No. 310). He
married Elizabeth, daughter of John Bardin, and had issue: —
{a) John Hamilton, died unmarried.
(b) Claud Hamilton, died unmarried October 1863.
(c) Grace Hamilton, married John Brown, of Glasgow, from
whom later " Hamiltons " of Barnes.
HrtTtS recorded in Lyon Office, 1865. — 1 and 4. Gules, a
heart or between three cinquefoils ermine, within a bordure
indented parted per pale of the second and tliird. 2 and 3.
Azure, a chevron cliequy argent and sable between three
fleurs-de-lis of the second (Brown). [Plate IV., fig. 9.]
CREST : A man's heart gules charged with a cinquefoil
argent. Motto : "Fidelis in adversis."
Pottie.
Authority — House of Hamilton.
(314) Robert Hamilton of Pottie, Perthshire, third son of Gavin Hamilton
(No. 299). Married Jane Dalzell, and had : —
(a) Gavin (No. 315).
(b) James (No. 316).
(315) GAVIN Hamilton OF POTTIE, died s.p., and was succeeded by his brother: —
(316) James Hamilton of Pottie, who was served heir to his brother 21st Feb-
ruary 1646. He left a son : —
(317) Robert Hamilton of Pottie, who was served heir to his father 6th May
1670.
Nielsland.
Authorities — Scots Peerage, Burke's Peerage, and House of Hamilton.
(318) John Hamilton of Nielsland, fifth son of James Hamilton (No. 244).
He was a witness, 4th July 1549 (Hamilton MSS.). He married
Elizabeth, only child of Patrick Hamilton of Udston (No. 443, b), and
had:—
(a) John (No. 319).
(b) James (No. 352).
