CREST : An oak tree traversed by a frame saw. SUPPORTERS : Two
antelopes (Laing). On Seal, 1552. — 1 and 4. Three cinquefoils. 2 and 3.
A lymphad (Macdonald). On Seal, 1560. — As last. Crest as above.
SUPPORTERS : Two antelopes, each gorged with a coronet and chained.
MOTTO : " Throvgh." In Lindsay's MS., 1542. — 1 and 4. Argent, a
lymphad sable (Arran). 2 and 3. Gules, three cinquefoils pierced argent

CREST as above. SUPPORTERS : Two antelopes, each gorged with an
antique crown. MOTTO as above ( Workman's MS.).
(10) JOHN HAMILTON, born about 1542 ; died 6th April 1604. Owing to his elder
brother's insanity, was treated as head of" the family. In 1547 he was
appointed to the Abbacy of Inchaffray, and in 1 55 1 Commendator of
Arbroath. Like all his family he sided with Queen Mary ; the Hamilton
estates were forfeited in 1579, and he fled to France. Returning to
Scotland, he was on 17th April 1599 created MARQUIS OF HAMILTON,
Earl of Arran, and Lord Evan. He married, contract dated 30th
December 1577, Margaret Lyon, daughter of John, seventh Lord Glamis,
and widow of Gilbert, fourth Earl of Cassillis, and had : —
(a) Edward Hamilton, died young.
(b) James (No. 11).
He had also a natural son : —
(c) Sir John Hamilton of Lettrick, ancestor of Lord Bargany
(No. is).

(11) James, second Marquis of Hamilton, bom 1589; died 2nd March 1624-25.
Succeeded his uncle as Earl of Arran in 1609. On 5th May 1608 he was
created Lord Aberbrothwick (Arbroath), and on 16th June 1619 he was
created a Peer of England as Earl of Cambridge and Lord Innerdale.
He married, contract dated 30th January 1603, Anna Cunningham,
daughter of James, Earl of Glencairn. They had issue : —
(a) James (No. 12). (b) William (No. 13).

Supporters : Two antelopes (Laing).
(12) James, third Marquis of Hamilton, born 19th June 1606; executed 9th
March 1648-49. He sided with King Charles I., and on 12th April 1643
the King created him DUKE OF HAMILTON, Marquis of Clydesdale, Earl
of Arran and Cambridge, Lord Avon and Innerdale. Like the King he
was sentenced to death and beheaded on the date mentioned above. He
