PREFACE
ARMS.
The distinguishing Arms of the family are a red shield charged with three
argent or ermine cinquefoils, generally pierced. By referring to the Plates it will
be observed that the cadets usually differenced by adding a small charge in the
centre of the shield.
HAMILTON BOOKS.
In addition to Anderson's work above referred to are : —
(i.) George Chalmers' Hamilton Family, 1807.
(2.) Wm. Aiton's An Enquiry into the Pedigree, Descent, etc., of tlie
Chiefs of the Hamilton Family, 1827.
(3.) T. R. Buchanan's Memoirs of the House of Hamilton, 1828.
(4.) J. Riddell's Reply thereto, 1828.
(5.) T. K. Lowry's The Hamilton Manuscripts, 1867.
(6.) The Pedigree of the Hamilton Family, by Audi alteram partem
(? Joseph Bain).
(7.) Sir William Fraser's Memorials of the Earls of Haddington, 1889.
See also Douglas' Peerage and Baronage, Scots Peerage, etc.
In order to save space I have dealt with the males alone, and I have
omitted courtesy titles.
In conclusion, I have to thank Sir James Balfour Paul, Lord Lyon, for
allowing me to consult the Records in the Lyon Office ; Mr F. J. Grant, Lyon
Clerk, for valuable assistance ; and Mr W. Rae Macdonald, for allowing me to
examine Hamilton Seals in his possession, accounts of which have not yet been
published.
