Dempster (died 1903, aged nearly 90.) The
inventor himself was bom at Dundee in 1843.
Trained as a mechanical engineer, he went to
London about 30 years ago, and is now associated
with Kent, the well-known engineers in High
Holborn. Mr Gordon's record goes back to
1870. when he invented some yam machinery.
In 1882 he began his historic experiments on the
effects of oil in calming a stormy sea. He has
produced anemometers, glazed tiles, valves, and
a great many other patents. One of his most
recent efforts is a governor for marine engines,
patented in connection with Charles Andrews
and Thomas Jackson. His portrait appeared in
the "British Journal of Commerce." March 17,
18S8. Mr Gordon married Jean Louden, and
has four sons and four daughters : —
